The prisoners escaped in the midst of a mutiny of more than two hours, the detainees managed to take control of the prison and escape the compound, which put the Niger authorities on high alert.
Despite this, the authorities of the African country have not commented on the incident, nor have they revealed the causes of the riot, the means of escape or the number of prisoners on the run.
Koutoukalé prison, some 50 kilometres north-west of Niamey, is known to be the place of detention of many members of terrorist groups and the escape has raised alarms about the risk that these individuals may reorganize and commit terrorist acts.
It should be noted that during 2023 and throughout 2000 Niger was involved in fighting Islamic groups in the area, yet the Sahel area has not achieved political stability.
According to the ‘Armed Conflict Location And Event Data Project’ (ACLED) platform, which tracks violence in the world, between May 2023 and the same month this year 1,460 people died in violent events in Niger by non-State groups and another 997 by state forces.
